New Arturo Report Leveraging Aerial Imagery and AI Exposes Growing Risk of Hailstorms on Homes in Colorado

DENVER, CO (April 15, 2024) - Arturo, the property intelligence company that delivers portfolio-wide underwriting, risk, claims and catastrophe-driven event insights, has released a comprehensive hail report on Colorado, one of the most hail-prone states in the U.S. This report sheds light on the increasing impact of hailstorms on homes in the region and offers guidance to homeowners, insurers, and contractors on how to mitigate these risks amidst a changing climate.

Arturo’s innovative technology is able to utilize artificial intelligence models with aerial imagery, satellite-derived weather data, public records, and post-disaster imagery to analyze property vulnerability to weather-related events. As today marks the start of hail season in Colorado, the latest report from Arturo highlights the challenges of predicting hailstorms, with climate change impacting the frequency and severity of these events in the state responsible for the 2nd highest volume of hail-related claims, and suggests ways stakeholders can adequately prepare.

"As we head into hail season, Arturo's latest report focusing on Colorado’s residential vulnerability serves as an example of the growing threat of storms everywhere, and emphasizes the urgent need for predictive data- and science-based measures to mitigate risks," said Marty Smuin, CEO of Arturo. "As climate change continues to impact the frequency and severity of these events, stakeholders must collaborate to protect properties and communities."

Among the report's key findings:

  • Metal roofs, which are more durable against hail, represent only 1.36% of roofs in Colorado, highlighting a potential area for improvement.
  • Currently, 1,894 homes in Colorado have tarps on them, underscoring the urgent need for proactive maintenance.
  • 45.68% of homes in Colorado have tree overlap, which could increase the risk of property damage during storms.
  • A substantial number of homes have skylights (12.10%), solar panels (7%), and cars parked outside (1 in 5 homes), making them more susceptible to hail damage.

Arturo's advanced technology is able to provide detailed insights into a multitude of risks ranging from wildfires to wind, offering a level of granularity that was previously unattainable. This level of analysis can help homeowners and insurers identify significant potential risks and take proactive measures to mitigate them, while reinforcing the need for collaboration among insurers, contractors and homeowners.
